How to use The Canon EOS 500 also know as the EOS Kiss and EOS rebel xs. This video will show you everything there is to know about the eos 500- The EOS 500 viewfinder has 90% coverage and one AF point in the center. This is the only point used to focus the lens. If the camera is not able achieve focus you may be too close to the subject for the lens you are using. As well the AF systems identifies contrast so by focusing on an object with no contrast like a white wall the camera will struggle to obtain focus. The EOS 500 has several settings for photographers looking to avoid the technical side of taking photos. These settings can be found at the bottom of the selection dial. The manual refers to them as Image Zones but they are really just auto exposure settings. At the bottom of the dial is the sports mode. While in this mode the camera will select a high shutter speed to freeze motion and capture the action of fast moving objects. This mode allows continuous shooting. The flash should not pop up in this mode. If it does simply press it back down into the lock position. The Flower icon located above the sports mode is for close up photos and macro photography. This is used for maximum magnification of the subject. Note that the camera will not be able to focus closer than the lens' minimum focus distance. If this occurs the focus circle in the viewfinder will blink at 2 blinks a second indicating the camera is unable to gain focus. If the subject is not well lit the cameras built in flash may pop up. Using the built in flash is the fastest way to burn through the batteries. Above the Macro mode is Landscape mode. The camera will select a higher F Stop for better landscape photos. The flash should not pop up in this setting. Wide angle lenses generally produce the best results in this mode. The final mode before fully auto is portrait mode. This mode will select a lower F Stop for more background blur. Note that older lenses may be very soft around the wider apertures. The final mode is full auto where the camera will select all settings for the scene. This is a great option for anyone who is about to pass their camera off to a stranger. This is great because the camera will be in complete control of all of the settings. Manual settings CREATIVE ZONEs The EOS 500 separates the more advanced modes from the auto modes with the RED L that stands for lock or glorified off position. The modes from P to A-Dep is referred to as the CREATIVE ZONE. We will go over how to control each exposure setting individually in a moment but first we will go over the creative zone modes available . P is simply an auto setting that you have more control over. You can move up and down in the settings and the camera will show you several options that will properly expose the image. TV is the shutter priority mode best used for sports. You control the shutter speed and the camera controls the Aperture or F Stop for proper exposure. AV is used when the depth of field is most important such as during portraits. You control the Aperture/ Fstop and the camera will adjust the Shutter speed to obtain proper exposure. M or manual mode give maximum control to the photographer over the aperture and the shutter speed. Since the ISO is determined by the type of film used there is no changing the ISO without changing the film loaded. A DEP is designed to guess the proper F Stop or aperture to get everything inside the metering area in focus.This is best for group photos.
